Canadian Automobile Association: Helping Aging Drivers

Our Goals and Issues

Driving is a privilege, not a right.

However, CAA also believes that this privilege should be granted fairly, and based on competency or functional ability rather than age alone.

Age is not necessarily an indicator of driving skill or ability. Every driver is an aging driver, and the aging process varies from individual to individual.  As drivers age, everyone experiences changes in their physical, sensory and cognitive abilities. Although overall driving difficulties will eventually increase with age, not all older drivers are at the same risk.  Visual, cognitive, and physical problems can occur at any age, and complicate the task of driving.

CAA is dedicated to ensuring driver mobility as long as safely possible, and this Web site is part of our commitment to advocate for the rights of motorists and travellers in Canada, while pursuing our goal of safer drivers in safer vehicles on safer roads.
