Canadian Automobile Association: Helping Aging Drivers

Our Goals and Issues

Issues for Older Drivers

CAA believes that traffic safety stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments, need to identify and implement a balanced approach that takes into account a person's mobility and the individual's and public's right to expect a reasonable level of road safety.

This balanced approach includes:

  • Ability-based licensing that doesn't base competency on age alone
  • Improvements to road and highway design that make safe navigating and manoeuvring easier, not just for seniors, but for all drivers
  • Changes in vehicle design to accommodate the physical challenges of aging and other drivers
  • Road safety education that includes and addresses the specific needs of aging drivers and their families
