The Federal Government's Role
In April 2005, the federal government and automobile manufacturers voluntarily agreed to reduce GHG emissions from new vehicles in Canada. This agreement was an excellent example of government and private industry working together to reduce the effects of climate change.
CAA recommends that the federal and provincial governments continue to make environmentally conscious choices when it comes to transportation and roadway infrastructure, including:
- Supporting the active and public transportation infrastructure so more people can make increasing use of these mobility options.
- Implementing financial incentives designed to increase and sustain consumer demand for more fuel efficient automobiles.
- Encouraging Eco-Driving behaviours among Canadians, citing the environmental, public health and economic benefits of reducing automobile fuel use and emissions.
- Supporting Canadians who choose to become Eco-Drivers, by making it a funding priority, and implementing education and awareness programs to ensure that Canadians are both informed and engaged in Eco-Driving techniques. Advertise driver training and support programs that will help.
