Increase Fuel Efficiency in Vehicles
Automobiles need to be made more fuel-efficient, starting with their weight. Vehicles with lightweight components help reduce emissions, however recent industry research (2006) indicates that vehicles in North America are as heavy as they were in 1975.
Increasing the number of efficient vehicles will have direct benefits for motorists, the environment, public health and our economy.
To meet this goal, CAA and Pollution Probe recommend:
- Developing effective fuel efficiency standards for implementation by 2010 in Canada.
- Reporting progress made on reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Canadian Auto Industry.
- Supporting continued research and development of advanced automotive and fuel technologies in Canada that can help to significantly reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission levels.
CAA and Pollution Probe support the current MOU between the federal government and the Automobile Manufacturers. We encourage them to look to the future and implement progressive vehicle fuel efficiency standards and policies.
