As you drive:

1. Look well ahead.
2. Scan continuously.
3. Scan left, centre and right again.

At intersecting streets:

1. Obey all traffic signs.
2. Scan left, centre, right, and left again before going through.
3. Check your rear and side mirrors for cyclists.
4. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spot for cyclists.
5. Enter the intersection continuing to scan for cyclists.
6. Keep eye contact with motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Right of Way

To determine right of way at a controlled or uncontrolled intersection:

1. Scan left, centre, and right for cyclists or pedestrians.
2. Remember that dismounted cyclists walking next to their bikes are considered pedestrians. If there is a cyclist standing with their bicycle waiting to cross the street or in the process of crossing the street, come to a full stop and yield the right of way to the cyclist.
3. Wait until the cyclist is clear of the crosswalk.
4. Scan left, centre, and right for any other road users.
5. Proceed through the intersection when safe to do so.

Right Turns

To make a right turn at an intersection:

1. Slow down and check your rear and side mirrors for cyclists.
2. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spots for cyclists.
3. Signal your intention to turn right.
4. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spot again for cyclists.
5. If safe, steer into the right lane and adjust your speed to the flow of traffic.

Left Turns

To make a left turn at an intersection:

1. Scan a block ahead and look for cyclists.
2. Look left, centre, right, and then left again.
3. Check your rear and side mirrors for cyclists.
4. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spot for cyclists.
5. Signal your intention to turn left.
6. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spot again for cyclists.
7. If safe, steer into the lane and adjust your speed to the flow of traffic.

Changing Lanes

To make a lane change:

1. Check your rear and side mirrors for cyclists.
2. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spot for cyclists.
3. Signal your intention to change lanes.
4. Shoulder check your vehicle’s blind spot again for cyclists.
5. If safe, steer into the lane and adjust your speed to the flow of traffic.
