CAA recognizes top road safety journalists of 2019

October 30, 2019

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is pleased to present its 2019 CAA Road Safety Journalism Award to automotive journalist, Mark Toljagic.

The award, now in its eighth year, draws attention to the importance of public service journalism on road safety, and highlights the work being done in the field. The award was determined by a panel of judges: Kristine D’Arbelles of CAA National, Julia D’Arbelles of CAA Atlantic and Natalie Melanson of the University of Moncton.

Toljagic’s winning article explores what today’s drivers, who may have never experienced a flat tire, can do to ensure their tires survive unscathed. While winter tires always get a lot of attention, the article shows that summer tire maintenance is just as important to road safety.

“Toljagic’s story shares a number of tips that will help a new generation of drivers understand how to take care of their tires, and that should lead to safer roads,” said Ian Jack, managing director, communications and government relations , CAA National.

Justin Pritchard received an honourable mention for his article on ‘Advanced Safety Features for the First Time User.’ As advanced safety features, such as blind spot detectors, become more popular in the everyday vehicle, Pritchard takes an in depth look at the technology. In particular, he dives into what the advanced safety features can and cannot do. Educating drivers is the first step in keeping our roads safe.

The awards were presented October 29 at the annual meeting of the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada in Ajax, Ontario.
