More than 1,600 people die on Canadian roads every year*. Road crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in Canada and cost our economy more than $10 billion per year**. Most of these deaths are caused by distracted driving, impaired driving or speeding, and are preventable.

As a road safety advocate for more than a century, the Canadian Automobile Association is pleased to help promote the Fédération Internationale de Automobile (FIA) to promote the global road safety campaign #3500Lives (3,500 being the number of people killed in car crashes worldwide every day). The campaign raises awareness and encourages citizens around the world to focus when driving and be safe on the road.

Thirteen famous ambassadors – such as artist Pharrell Williams, actress Michelle Yeoh and tennis player Rafael Nadal – promote simple and universal messages to save lives on the road.

Several campaign videos were created and promote messages like:

The campaign calls on citizens across the world to add their signature to a global manifesto, which calls on governments at all levels to make road safety a priority. The manifesto has 10 priorities: build better and smarter roads, design safer vehicles, improve data collection, set ambitious targets, make more effective laws, stop speeding, tackle impaired-driving, set aside a global fund for safer roads and encourage private sector support.

Translated into 30 languages, the campaign is backed by 245 auto clubs in 143 countries.

Everyone has a role to play in making our roads safer. Visit CAA.ca and FIA.com/3500lives and follow #3500Lives for tips on how you can make a difference on our roads.
