Protecting your vehicle

A vehicle is stolen every five minutes in Canada.

Technology has made it simple for thieves to steal vehicles, often in only a minute or two. Simply sitting in front of your house, thieves can copy the signal your key fob emits and create their own key to drive away with your car.

The cost of vehicle theft in Canada is more than $1.5 billion a year, and without significant action, that number is expected to continue to grow. And that cost goes beyond just dollars and cents. When a car is stolen, it impacts more than your mobility and time. Stolen items, like wallets, mobile devices and car insurance can lead to identity theft. Also, paying a deductible and purchasing a new vehicle at higher interest rates can also impact your budget. To help combat this epidemic, CAA is providing drivers with tips to reduce the chances of their vehicle being stolen.

Did you know 75% of Canadians say they are concerned about the increase rate of auto theft?

Law enforcement, governments, insurance companies and others all have a part to play in combatting auto theft and CAA is working with them on the problem. CAA is concerned that if the rate of vehicle theft is not brought under control, auto-related costs will continue to rise for drivers. In the meantime, there are some things drivers can do to help protect their vehicles from theft.

Here are tips to help you reduce the chances of vehicle theft:

Place your keys in a pouch that blocks a key’s signal, commonly known as a Faraday pouch.

Use visible deterrents to secure your vehicle such as a steering-wheel lock, brake pedal lock, or wheel lock, such as ‘The Club’.

Lock your doors (both car and home) and park your vehicle inside if you have a garage.

Install motion sensors or lights and a camera on your driveway to capture any activity.

Always avoid leaving your vehicle unattended while it is running.
