AJAX, ON – The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is pleased to present Jil McIntosh with the 2016 CAA Road Safety Journalism Award, which draws attention to the importance of public service journalism on road safety, and highlights the excellent work being done in the field.

McIntosh won the 2016 award for her article Truck Side Guards May Not Be Safer For Cyclists. The piece looked at both sides of the issue of using truck side-guards and side-skirts as a way to prevent collisions with vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, as well the research being done on potential high tech solutions.

“McIntosh deserves this award for her extensive research on the topic, getting a global view of the problem and finding ways to improve road safety,” said Ian Jack, CAA managing director of communications and government relations.  “She also does a great job of addressing the emotional aspect of the story, while relaying the information in a clear and concise manner.”

Kelley Taylor also received an honorable mention for his article Drive to Succeed, a story about the role driver education programs play in road safety.

“Taylor’s article contrasts Sweden and Canada’s licensing systems and how Sweden’s more stringent system has reduced collisions. He also does a great job of highlighting the responsibilities that come with being a well-educated and safe driver,” said Jack.

The awards were presented last night at an awards banquet hosted by the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada.
