Slow Down. Move Over. Save a Life: CAA Urges Drivers to Protect Roadside Workers

May 13, 2025

In recognition of Slow Down, Move Over Day, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is calling on motorists to adhere to laws requiring them to Slow Down and Move Over for roadside safety workers such as stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and other roadside assistance vehicles displaying flashing lights.

Every year, CAA Clubs across Canada mark the second Tuesday of May – this year, May 13 – as National Slow Down Move Over Day. In the last decade, over 100 tow truck operators across North America lost their lives after being struck by oncoming traffic while assisting stranded motorists with collisions, flat tires, and breakdowns.

“By simply slowing down and moving over, motorists can help prevent collisions and protect those who work to keep our roads safe.” says Ian Jack, vice-president of public affairs at CAA National.

As part of CAA’s efforts to help increase awareness and improve roadside safety, CAA delivers digital alerts to drivers approaching active roadside scenes through a system called HAAS Alerts. In the last year, this program alerted approximately 136 million drivers that they are approaching an emergency roadside worker, helping prevent countless incidents.

Here are CAA’s tips for motorists on the road:

Slow Down – Reduce your speed when approaching a stopped vehicle with flashing lights.

Move Over – Change lanes if safe to do so, giving roadside workers and stranded motorists extra space.

Stay Alert – Avoid distractions and stay focused on the road.

Slow Down, Move Over is the law in every province. CAA encourages drivers to familiarize themselves
with their province’s specific requirements to ensure they are doing their part to keep roadside workers safe. For more information and resources, visit www.caa.ca/slowdownmoveover.
