AJAX, ON – The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is pleased to announce the winner of the 2015 CAA Road Safety Journalism Award, presented last night at the awards banquet of the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada.
CAA is pleased to sponsor the CAA Road Safety Journalism Award to draw attention to the importance of public service journalism on road safety, and to highlight the excellent work being done in the field.
Lorraine Sommerfeld won the 2015 award for a compelling article about a young woman whose life was irreversibly changed by an accident.
“This story brings home graphically the sometimes tragic consequences of not maintaining focus on safety when we drive,” said Ian Jack, CAA managing director of communications and government relations. “It tells, in a compelling fashion, the heart-wrenching story of a young woman who chose to put her feet up on the dash, only to be involved in a horrific crash from which she will never fully recover.”
Paul Ferriss received an honorable mention for his informative piece on in-car technology and the distractions that can accompany it.
“This excellent article takes us behind the world of beeping, chiming and vibrating that is the modern vehicle cockpit, to explore the dangerous cognitive distractions they can cause. It not only poses the question, ‘how much more can we take?’ but provides the best answers science can currently provide,” said Jack.
CAA is a federation of nine Clubs providing more than 6 million Members with exceptional emergency roadside service, complete automotive and travel services, member savings and comprehensive insurance services. CAA also advocates on issues of concern to its Members, including road safety, the environment, mobility, infrastructure and consumer protection.
